Simple Stewed Cabbage

Simple Stewed Cabbage: Good afternoon y’all, we didn’t get the big snowstorm they said we would, but we did get a little more snow and ice for a short while and the power stayed on. I mentioned this stewed cabbage the other day so I thought I would share the recipe. This is how Nannie Polly fixed stewed cabbage, she did use water and a bullion cube which I now replace with chicken broth but that’s the only difference. This is so good, I slathered up a hot piece of cornbread with butter and sopped away.

There were a lot of times that Nannie would just stew some cabbage, fix a pone of cornbread, slice up a big tomato and sweet onion and that’s all she and Papa would have for supper. Since they ate their big meal for dinner (lunch) supper was more often than not a much smaller meal anyway. Mama has told me stories of her Grandmother, my Great Granny Hollis, who would start fixing dinner alongside making breakfast so that when Papa would come in from the cotton fields at noon dinner would be done. Mama said that Granny and Papa ate a lot of stews some with meat and some without. I can remember Grannies big dutch oven cooking away on that old wood stove alongside loaves of bread baking. For as long as they lived where their home place was Granny was happy, even though she rarely smiled, with the simple life she and Papa had made for themselves. I’m grateful that I was able to grow up sharing their simple life and have the memories to cherish. Simple Stewed Cabbage.
